Oct. 1, 2008
ST. LOUIS - The 2008 Saint Louis softball team's cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.428 for the 2007-08 academic year helped the Billikens earn recognition as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/Girls Got Game Top 10 All-Academic Team. SLU, which finished with the sixth-highest GPA in the nation, was the only Atlantic 10 Conference member among the top 10. Tennessee Tech led the nation with a 3.540 GPA with Gardner-Webb (3.478) and Seton Hall (3.450) following in second and third, respectively. Southern Illinois (3.447) and DePaul (3.429) rounded out the top five with Evansville (3.420) trailing SLU in seventh place. With identical GPAS of 3.414, Mississippi State and South Carolina tied for eighth, and Bucknell finished 10th with a 3.402 team GPA. SLU, which has consistently been one of the top programs in the athletic department academically, has posted a 1-3 record this fall. Last weekend, the Billikens split a doubleheader with Southeast Missouri State after falling to Truman State and Missouri Science & Technology to begin the fall schedule on Sunday, Sept. 21. Sophomore Kristin Nicoletti (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) leads Saint Louis with six hits and four stolen bases. Senior infielder Rachel Heet (St. Louis, Mo. / Mehlville) and rookie utility player Erin Cejka (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) follow with four hits apiece, with Heet driving in a team-high three runs. Freshman catcher Liz Jones (Centreville, Va. / Westfield) leads the club with two extra-base hits while adding three stolen bases. In the circle, freshman Kelcie Matesa (Benld, Ill. / Gillespie) has been the dominating force. She picked up SLU's only win and has tossed two complete games, including one shutout, with six strikeouts.
The Bills continue their fall exhibition slate in Dupo, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 4. Saint Louis starts the day with a 1:45 p.m. contest against Missouri State before facing Parkland College at 4:45 p.m. |
