SLU Claims Fall Season Dual Match Win Over Eastern Illinois

St. Louis, Mo. - In this fall's only dual match, Saint Louis women's tennis soundly defeated Eastern Illinois 6-1. The Billikens return three from last season adding four newcomers to the 2004-2005 roster. Saint Louis was aided by a beautiful weather day at the Billiken Tennis Center on campus. The returning top-six players are Katerina Lozanova, Amanda Hellberg and Ana Renda. Four newcomers on the Billiken roster are Christina Gonzalez, Tara Grant, Tina Grasso and Rachel McCullagh. The 1-0 start for the fall season was indeed fruitful for the young team. "Our overall team goal was to domintate the things that we had control over," said head coach Jonathan Zych. "Those things were to play with great effort, intensity, focus, and to be supportive of our teams' members. While we accomplished those things, we also kept our poise and got off to a great start playing for Saint Louis University." In singles play: 1) Katerina Lozanova defeated Sarah Freeman 6-1, 6-2 2) Amanda Hellberg lost to Sandra Sasidharan 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 3) Ana Renda defeated Madina Membetova 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 4) Tara Grant defeated Constanza Comacho 6-2, 6-2 5) Rachel McCullagh defeated Jill Wirtz 6-3, 6-1 6) Christina Gonzalez defeated Ashley Glover 6-3, 6-2
In doubles play: 1) Lozanova/Grant defeated Freeman/Sasidharan, 8-5 2) Renda/Hellberg defeated Camacho/Wirtz, 8-0 3) Grasso/McCullagh lost to Membetova/Glover, 8-5 The next competiton for the women's team will be Oct. 15-17 at the Memphis Invitational Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. |
