Billiken Women Participate in the Memphis/Varsity ProShop Tournament

Memphis, Tenn. - Saint Louis is in Memphis for the 2004 University of Memphis/Varsity ProShop Tournament. Only Rachel McCullagh advanced in singles play while the rest of the Billiken squad head to consolation competition. In No. 1 singles action, Katerina Lozanova lost her first match of the season 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Anna Lask (Murray State). Lozanova then lost to Jenny Batty (Ball State), but the score was not reported. At No. 2, Amanda Hellberg lost to Andrea Feichtinger (Memphis) 7-5, 6-1 and faces Margot Carter (Tenn. Tech) in consolation play. Ana Renda was defeated at No. 3 by Melisa Cansado (Tenn. Tech) 6-2, 6-1 and faced Jennifer Pollack (Ball State) in the consolation round. Renda advanced after a 6-2, 6-2 victory and will meet Joana Hornestam (SIU) on Saturday. Tara Grant lost to Kristin Noble (Memphis) in a 7-5, 6-4 (4) battle in the No. 4 spot. Grant won her consolation match over Monica Penon (Ark. St.) 6-4, 6-1 and faces Zuzana Palovic (SIU) on Saturday. In the No. 5 singles flight, Tina Grasso was defeated by Renee Branker (Ark. St.) 6-0, 6-1. Grasso advanced to the consolation championship match schedule for Saturday after Stephanie Farrar (Ball St.) defaulted. Grasso faces Bonnie Adams (UT-Chattanooga) for the title. At No. 6, McCullagh knocked off Tami McQueen (Murray State) in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 battle. McCullagh then shut out Francesca Guerieri (UT-Chattanooga) 6-0, 6-0 to advance to Saturday's title match facing Christina Hall (Murray State). In doubles play, Lozanova/Grant lost to Dirnstorfer/Cowie (Memphis) 8-1 in the No. 1 position. The Billiken pair will face Blanco/Palovic (SIU) in consolation play.
At No. 2 doubles, Hellberg/Renda defeated Leeper/Hall (Murray State) 8-6 moving on to face Feichtinger/Tijoe (Memphis) in semifinal action. Grasso/McCullagh lost to Penon/Lohkande (Ark. State) 8-6. The Billiken tandem will face Homestam (SIU) / Kohl (Memphis) tomorrow in the consolation round. The second day of the tournament will begin with semifinals doubles action at 9 a.m., Sat. Oct. 16. |
