St. Louis - Saint Louis junior Amanda Hellberg (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) has been named to the 2006 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis All-Conference team after leading the Billikens with 16 singles wins. She was also recognized for her work in the classroom as one of six student-athletes selected to the A-10's Academic All-Conference team. "Amanda is extremely deserving of these honors," Billiken head coach Jonathan Zych said. "She is easily one of the top players in the conference and could potentially be nationally ranked next year. She demonstrates a high work ethic not only on the tennis court but in the classroom as well. Amanda's academic schedule forced her to practice many times on her own either late at night or early in the morning, and that dedication and focus is a big reason for her success." Hellberg helped the Billikens to a 15-9 overall record and a tie for fifth place in the A-10 Championships. Playing mainly at No. 1 singles, she accumulated a 16-5 record and collected 19 victories in doubles action. At one point this season, she won a career-high 12 singles matches in a row. Hellberg became the first Billiken player in recent history to top a ranked opponent when she beat nationally-ranked Liz Garza of Missouri State 6-0, 6-2. She recorded another first when she was named the A-10's women's tennis Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 12. The honor, the first A-10 weekly award for the women's tennis program, came after she swept her singles and doubles matches against Arkansas-Little Rock and Southeast Missouri.
A nutrition and dietetics major, Hellberg was one of only three players in the A-10 named to both the All-Conference and Academic All-Conference teams. To be eligible for Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for his/her entire academic career. |
